Canal de la Marne au Rhin, Canal de la Sarre, Moselle, Canal des Vosges
Our base at Lutzelbourg provides an Alsatian welcome, with its castle and its famous crystal workshops. Whichever way you cruise with your self drive boat, half-timbered houses, onion domed church-towers, intricate wrought iron work and a hundred small details give the villages in this region a festival air.
Wherever you stop during your boating holiday, you’ll find the food equally special: sauerkraut and sausage as well as mouth-watering plum and greengage tarts.
Cruising the Canal de la Sarre, you’ll pass through delightful woodland and welcoming small towns which will tempt you to stop for a delicious local restaurant lunch. At Sarreguemines you’ll be charmed by the hand-decorated pottery and on your way back, you’ll use the famous boat lift of Arzviller which replaces 17 locks.
Following the Canal de la Marne au Rhin, you’ll discover from your barge the town of Saverne and its ducal palace. Further east, you will cruise across the Alsatian plain into the heart of Strasbourg.
Don’t miss the city of Toul, a town fortified by Vauban, and enjoy fine views over the loops of the river Moselle! You are entering Lorraine. Its countryside is just as wonderful as its cities, and in Nancy, the Stanislas square, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, is one of the highlights of the city.
