Canal de Briare, du Loing, Latéral à la Loire
The Canal de Briare is the oldest canal in the world. The spectacular 7 locks at Rogny are no longer in use but can still be visited and marvelled at. Aboard your self drive Pénichette®, you can cruise at leisure through beautiful wooded countryside dotted with sparkling lakes.
To the north of Briare, the waterways will lead you to Montargis, where the canal runs by waterside streets lined with half-timbered houses. The route continues towards Nemours along the Canal du Loing, then Ferrières, Château-Landon and Môret-sur-Loing, which brings you into the heart of the Gâtinais region.
Travelling south from Briare on the Canal Latéral à la Loire, you’ll find the impressive Briare aqueduct built by Eiffel, that will take you over the Loire and lead you towards Sancerre and its renowned vineyards.
Your Pénichette®, will take you to Apremont sur-Allier with its gorgeous gardens, and then La Charité sur Loire and Nevers, with its rich heritage of the Dukes of Nevers.
During your canal cruise, don’t forget to stop and taste some of the local delicacies from Nivernais and Berry, such as the white wines of Sancerre and Pouilly- Fumé which you should savour with a little goat’s cheese, “bouchon” or “Crottin de Chèvre”. Delicious!
