Digoin and Paray-le-Monial, with its magnificent basilica, are well worth a visit. It is an important milestone for walkers on the Pilgrim’s way to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.
The Canal de Roanne à Digoin leads to Roanne, a synonym for gastronomy all over France, but also famous for pottery and ceramics. This route leads through splendid areas of countryside near the Loire.
The Brionnais region is famous for its Roman churches, easy to access from your Pénichette®. In Iguerande, Anzy-le-Duc, Marcigny or in the Abbey of Charlieu you can find remarkable carved reliefs. In the oil mill of Iguerande nut, hazelnut and sunflower oil are produced and delivered to the finest restaurants in France.
At Decize, the Canal Latéral meets the Loire, and river swimming is a great treat in the warm sunshine. Salmon and chad swim all the way up here from the sea to spawn. Take the southern part of the Canal du Nivernais and cruise through ravishing countryside to the secret heart of the Morvan, or visit Nevers, steeped in history. Crossing high above the Allier on the canal bridge of the Guétin, you will enjoy a magnificent panorama across many famous vineyards to pretty villages such as Sancerre and St-Satur.
