Canal du Centre, and rivers Saône and Seille
Saint Léger sur Dheune is an ideal start base for a river cruise and food and wine lovers will love it! Cruising your Pénichette® on the Canal du Centre, you’ll pass through some of the most renowned vineyards of the Côte Chalonnaise.
The twisting valley of the Dheune is where you will see the varnished tile roofs of charming Burgundian villages. At the foot of the Côte Chalonnaise lie the world-famous wine producing villages: Mercurey; Santenay with its 13th century church of St-Jean-de-Naroise standing amid the vines; Montrachet, synonymous with fine whites; and Rully with its 12th century castle.
Further south, the Saône and the Seille offer many possibilities for swimming in their clear, fresh waters. Don’t miss sights like Tournus and Mâcon with their interesting architectural heritage such as their Romanic churches, re-calling their wealthy days in the Middle Ages. The Roman tiled rooftops tell of the proximity to the south of France and the Mediterranean influence.
Upstream, the Saône crosses lush green meadows. One of the most beautiful milestones is Verdun sur- le-Doubs, perched on an island at the estuary of the Doubs. This river offers a very attractive 10 km long river boating route to Pontoux, St-Symphorien and Seurre with a local museum in a beautiful building are worth a stop, too.
