Germany 2015: garden festival on the river Havel

If your canal boat holidays will take you towards Germany in the near future, to the region around Mecklenburg, Brandenburg and Berlin, just keep following the waterway and it will bring you to one of the best horticultural shows in Europe.

Put it in your diary straight away! Between 18 April and 11 October 2015, Germany is the place to go boating. BUGA is a stunning national horticultural show that has been held every two years since 1951, in different towns across Germany (Hamburg in 2013, Koblenz in 2011, etc.); and in 2015 it will take place along the river Havel, near Berlin. This is great news for everybody who likes barge holidays! Especially as the show, which is usually restricted to just one town, will this time extend all along the river, from Rathenow to Brandenburg via Rhinau, Havelberg, Premnitz and Stölln – but mostly on the stretch of river that starts at Ketzin, Locaboat’s Berlin base. In total, more than a million plants and flowers will be exhibited over a distance of 80 km, and there will also be many green and eco-friendly buildings showcasing the latest inventions and revolutionary developments in renewable energy and environmental protection. And that’s not all: thousands of cultural events, from jazz concerts to acrobatic displays, will be organised throughout the six months of the show. One point to note is that a boat permit is required beyond the town of Ketzin.
