A spring break on a Penichette

Locaboat’s season starts in mid-March. So why not get off to an early start to make the most of this wonderful season? Just look at the advantages of choosing Spring for your canal barge holidays...

Spring is the season of flowers and new shoots, when nature wakes up. All our barge holidays, north and south, are showing off their best scenery. Of course, Holland is a very popular destination for people on a self-drive boat. At this time of year the tulips are in full bloom, turning everything into an explosion of colour. But a trip along the Burgundy canals won’t disappoint either. Fields, meadows, forests, everywhere is green and fresh with new growth. If you love the south of France, the Canal du Midi is a good choice. For one thing, the air’s so warm and balmy. You’ll also find it noticeably less busy than during high season when traffic on the canals is a little heavier. You won’t have to wait at the locks, and you’ll have no trouble finding a quiet spot to moor up.

What’s more, prices are lower in Spring - and in October - than at other times of year, and they stay low until 25 April. Finding a good deal can be a pleasure in itself... especially in the school holidays. It’s true that you might wake up to one or two cold days at this time of year, but even if you feel the cold, you needn’t worry: the Linssen and also the Terrasse and Classique Penichettes© are all equipped with blown-air heating. The Flying Bridge and Europa models have a real diesel-fuelled boiler. So you can make yourselves a nice mug of hot chocolate, and then head off to discover the many events and festivals that are starting up along the water’s edge. There’s the ‘Vinestival’ at Mâcon, for example; or you can visit châteaux and vineyards that hold wine-tasting events. Or there’s the ‘Carnaval’ at Toulouse, or the medieval festival ‘Moyen-Age en Scène’ at Carcassonne. Get your diary out. It’s time to have fun!
